It can be hard to eat healthy food when you're travelling. You're somewhere new. You don't know the best places to eat and are out of the normal routine. Plus you have less control over what you're eating. Moreover if you're travelling for work, you may have to negotiate business lunches and dinners.
 
All of these make healthy food choices more difficult.

One of the easier meals for finding healthy options is breakfast. And if you start your day with a good breakfast you are more likely to to make healthier choices throughout the rest of the day. Here are five suggestions for healthier breakfasts on the road:
 
 
  1. As scrambled eggs are often jazzed up with cream, choose poached eggs. Have these with some wholegrain toast and order a side of grilled mushrooms, tomatoes or steamed spinach.
     
  2. A bowl of porridge (or oatmeal) with some fresh fruit is another really good option, which will keep you going. Ask them to put the sugar or honey on the side, so you can add your own.
     
  3. If you're going to be somewhere for a few days and have access to a fridge, buy a small bag of muesli, plus some milk and yoghurt. Then you can make your own breakfast each day.
     
  4. Choose wholegrain toast over white bread and ask for it to be topped with avocado and tomato, or peanut butter. This will give you a more densely nutritious breakfast.
     
  5. Think about ordering a sandwich from the lunch menu. While sandwiches are not standard breakfast fare, you may be better off choosing a chicken and salad sandwich on wholegrain bread, than a fat and sugar filled muffin.
