I've been thinking for a while about buying a slow cooker. I've never owned one and up until recently, have never considered buying one. But I keep on seeing gorgeous recipes for soups, meals and all kinds of interesting foods, made using a slow cooker. Plus it strikes me that, at this time of year when it's cold outside, it would be lovely to fill the house with the smell of winter cooking . . . without my having to spend all day cooking. Of the recipes I've spotted recently, here are three of my favourites.

love the look of Sophie Robert's Italian Lentil and Chestnut Stew. Loads of vegetables and lentils, flavoured with fresh rosemary, red wine, cranberries and porcinis. Plus chestnuts. Oh my, it's simple cooking, but such a luxurious dish.

While they're sometimes hard to locate, I think black beans must be one of the best beans around. Which means I love the look of this slow cooked Black Bean Soup from A Life (Time) of Cooking. It's such a thick, rich looking meal, with plenty of vegetables and flavoured by cumin, turmeric, chilli and smoked paprika.

There's a lovely, simple and light Chicken with Pumpkin Stew on the BBC website. It's flavoured with garlic, chillies and thyme, has a splash of white wine, together with creme fraiche stirred through at the end for some extra creaminess.

And if you want more slow cooker recipes, why not browse through the website Slow Cooker From Scratch.  It has over 150 recipes, with different ingredients, flavours and cooking styles.

Do you use a slow cooker?
