Unseen Asia 2012 Winners
January 2013 winner
Solo, Central Java, Indonesia
Every year, crowds of onlookers flock to a colourful spectacle known as the Solo Batik Carnival, held in the Indonesian city since 2008. Batik is a traditional Javanese method of decorating fabric using wax and dye and the parade is the perfect platform to showcase designs created by the finest Solo batik artists.
“I always fall in love with the participants at this event,” says Titis Budi Widowati, a 27-year-old university research assistant. “This lady in the peacock costume caught my eye because it’s my favourite bird. And peacocks symbolise beauty and strength.”
