Eyes often lighten with age and certain medical conditions cause colour variations, but the most likely reason eyes change colour is due to your surroundings. Eyes reflect their environment. Your eyes will appear darker if you’re dressed in dark colours and are in a dimly lit room. Medications can also permanently darken the eyes. If just one eye changes colour, it could be a sign of Fuchs’ heterochromic uveitis, which puts patients at risk of glaucoma.<P>Regardless of how they look to others, however, to an optometrist peering into the back of your eyes, the pigment is almost invariably the same colour: a dark, dark brown. Soft hazels or baby blues are simply due to the structure of that individual’s irises, which reflect certain wavelengths of light more prominently.</P>
