 ■ Avoid statements that are mere retrenchment (That’s rubbish! or How dare you say that to me?). Instead, use words that invite the other party to let you have your say (I think you’ve misunderstood what I said or Can I just explain why I said that?).
 
■ However tempting it may be, don’t resurrect old conflicts, and never make things personal (You’ve never liked me, and you’re just saying that because you’re jealous.). Stick to the matter in hand, along with the relevant facts.
